Jesus tells the story this way:
"Be careful! Guard yourself against every
kind of greed. After all, the value of a person's life is
not increased by an abundance of possessions."
The land of a certain rich man produced
bountifully. And he thought to himself, saying, "What
should I do, since I have no place to store all these crops?"
Then he said, "This is what I'll do: I will tear
down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I'll store all my
crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you
have plenty stored up for many years. Take your ease. Eat,
drink, and be merry."
But God said to him, "Fool! This night your soul
will be required of you. Now whose will all those things
be which you have provided?"
So is the one who lays up treasure for himself, yet
is not rich toward God."
