What can I begin to say about the Lord Jesus? He is
life, and all that we will ever need from God.
Unbelievers simply do not understand what Christians mean when
we make so much about the need in every human life for Jesus
Christ. I remember how irritated I used to be at the
insistence of evangelical Christians who "witnessed" to me about
my need for Jesus.
"I'm already a Christian," I used to
tell them. (Anything to make them shut up and go away.)
But my claim to religious affiliation never even put a dent in
their enthusiasm. Like all unbelievers, I could not
understand what all the fuss was about.
I simply didn't know any better. I had never fully
experienced the grace of God or the power of Jesus Christ in
spiritual rebirth. I thought that my darkness of heart was
the way it had to be for all people. I thought that more
material possessions, more comforts, more music, more parties,
more sex, more drugs (etc. and etc.) was the path to real human
happiness and wholeness of life. Man, was I dead wrong.
Until I truly met Jesus Christ I had never lived a single day.
While the grace and power of God through Jesus Christ will not
make every day a "perfect" day, it will give us the spiritual
dimension and the eternal spring of "living water" we need to
truly know life. Christians have bad days. Christians
lose houses to fire, cars to theft, loved ones to physical
death. We know what it is to have a broken heart. In
fact, knowing Christ can make living on earth more complicated
and even more difficult. But the life within the
Presence of God's own Spirit makes us alive in ways that no
earthly circumstances can diminish. Jesus makes a human
life complete, and makes it continue into all eternity.
Enough said.
